I mentioned in my blog last week that I had some crazy phone conversations and promised to share one with you. Every Tuesday I send out a massive text message to over 100 people to let them know what is going on at youth group on Wednesday. I have been doing this over a year now and it seems to be a good reminder for them. Natalie and I are sitting together at the dinner table and I have already sent out this text message to everyone. I get a message back a few minutes later that says "Hi what is your name." I tell this person who I am and she continues to let me know that she has never met me before. This happens occasionally when students get their numbers changed and don't tell me. I asked her how old she was and if she lived in this county. I am preparing to invite her to church and then all of sudden her conversation turns to this...
She says, "Do you have a picture phone?"
"No, why would you ask that?"
"Just wondering... Hey here is my home number call me."
"Why would I call you?"
She replies, "So we can have fun on the phone."
Now I knew exactly what that meant and by this time Natalie is freaked out along with me that a girl who is 15 would want to talk to a stranger like this. I tell the girl I will call her in ten minutes. When I called she picked up the phone so fast it didn't even ring. She asked if this was Crockett and I asked to speak to her parents. A wave of panic ran all over this young girl. She asked, "Why do you want to talk to my parents?" I explained because she was going to have a inappropriate conversation with a stranger and I was going to tell her parents about it. She didn't like that so she hung up on me. I then texted her if she didn't let me talk to her parents right then I would find them and talk with them myself.
It breaks my heart to think that a young girl would have that type of conversation with a complete stranger. What is missing in her life for her to do this? What do you think her identity is found in? What would you have done?
I will share my conversion with her mom later this week. It will surprise you...
WOW, Crockett that is scary? Don't forget to let us know what her mom says later this week.

I hate cliffhangers. I can't wait to hear how this turned out. Just so you know, this happens more often than you think and there are girls in youth group that are like this. As a matter of fact, my daughters friend got busted by her mom two weekends ago trying to sneak out of the house to meet a "boy" she met on myspace. This girl is only 14. It scares me to think what would have happened if her mom wasn't awake and didn't catch her.
ReplyDeleteSo, you actually shared your "conversion" with her mom???
ReplyDeleteWas that like you called her up and said "Hello, is this Mrs. Smith? My name is Crockett and this is how I became a Christian..."
Talk about evangelism! :D
